Pythium Blight is a common fungal disease that can affect plants and animals. Various forms include Pythium Aphanidermatum, Ultimum, Insidiosum and Debaryanum.

Pythium Signs and Symptoms
Pythium Blight, or Pythium Aphanidermatum, often strikes grass in both warm and cool seasons; however, the disease is most prevalent during humid conditions and where there is limited air circulation or poor soil drainage. It is readily recognized as small spots or patches of blighted grass that appear suddenly during optimal conditions. As the disease progresses, infected patches will fade to a light brown colour. Left untreated, Pythium Blight will materialize as large patches of dead grass.

Pythium Ultimum is a soil-borne plant pathogen which causes damping-off and root rot. It can strike grasses, cabbages, carrots, cucumbers, melons and wheat and is most often caused by excessive moisture and heat in the soil. Affected plants are often stunted, wilting and collapsing.

Pythium Insidiosum is a fungus-like organism that naturally inhabits wetlands, ponds and dwamps. It causes the disease Pythiosis, which can infect animals. Insidiosum is commonly contracted by dogs and horses. Affected animals will rapidly begin losing weight, vomiting and exhibiting ulcerated skin lesions that will not heal.

Pythium Debaryanum, or damping off, can cause black and reddish-brown lesions on plants. Infected seedlings will eventually topple to the ground. Like other forms of fungal diseases, it is promoted by high humidity and high temperature. The damaged it can cause to the seed bed is considerable.

Pythium Prevention and Treatment
If contracted, Pythium in plants can spread throughout commercial operations in a matter of two to four days, resulting in crippling economic losses.

The simplest step towards preventing Pythium is by ensuring plants have appropriate ventilation and are not grown in crowded, unnecessarily humid conditions. Another proven method is the application of an environmentally friendly soil treatment such as TerraClean. TerraClean contains high concentrations of organic acids that penetrate the soil and destroy Pythium pathogens at the source. Furthermore, it can increase nutrient intake, stimulate root development and encourage plant growth.

Animals exhibiting symptoms of Pythiosis must be taken promptly to a veterinarian for testing and appropriate medical treatment. Common treatments for dogs include prescription of anti-fungal medication and, if necessary, surgical resection of infected tissues. For horses, an immunotherapy regimen has recently been developed that effectively kills the disease in greater than 90% of cases.

Pythium Root Rot is a very common plant disease caused by fungal-like Pythium species, often referred to as water molds. Pythium Root Rot can cause crippling economic losses to young seedlings and vegetable crops such as tomato, pepper, and cucumber, both in the field and particularly in greenhouse hydroponic systems where devastating root rot can spread to entire operations within two to four days due to continuous plant root exposure to flowing water in which Pythium organisms freely move.
